I'm glad that there won't be a contest next month because I really dislike some categories as of late. Some categories were okay, but the others have produced utterly cringeworthy winners. Can't we bring back the Freestyle category or something? Just because a concept hasn't been done before doesn't mean that high-quality maps can be made out of it. Might as well have Offscreen cheese map as a category next time, if we'll continue down this path.

Yeah those themes you mentioned are nice and straightforward, but I'm pretty sure that many maps from those categories would be too complicated and confusing, if not boring. Actually, it's hard to link something new with a fun gameplay. While new ideas are good to refresh the current rotation, fun gameplay must be in a map or public will get bored. There's A LOT of protected maps, which makes me think that almost everything has already been done before, somewhere. It's a little boring to try making something nowadays because of that. I don't know if you get what I mean but that's it... not always the simple themes do the simple and enjoyable maps.

A critical flaw I find with map contests like these is how high the points are awarded for having a stronger connection to the theme, which is not always synonymous with good gameplay. An example I gave earlier would be a category like "Offscreen cheese/hole". The most in-theme maps here would literally be removable from the rotation.

This is the worst mentality to have as a mapmaker. Never assume that everything's been done before, since that would lead to despair, instead of creative breakthroughs. The greatest mapmakers like Temple never stuck to a formula or a theme of maps, and that has allowed them to excel at redefining what is possible with maps.

Not always. I'm just saying that the categories should center on gameplay, or on fewer or simpler restrictions. Fewer restrictions means that there is more room for creativity in making maps. It's easier to make maps for categories like "Shaman cage map" or "vertical scrolling map" than it is for categories like "Easter" or "Transformice anniversary" since you simply rule out possibilities in the former, whereas you have to limit more your creative avenues on the latter.

This means that map quality will more likely be compromised in the interest of staying in theme. And when we're looking for the best maps, this is an unnecessary burden with little actual benefit.

No thanks; any effort I'd spend there is useless as long as event/thematic related categories would still make it onto the map contest. If it isn't clear yet, I'm saying there are already many good categories to choose from. I'm disappointed that some of these good ones are being put off for bad ones.
