That was actually quite a smart move on staff's part. If a user cares about their account in game and does something bad enough to warrant such a punishment (such as harassment of a user using the methods of contact through Atelier801, sharing X-rated content, et cetera) on this forum, they should be banned in game. Subsequently, it should be vice versa as well -- if they do those sorts of things in game, they shouldn't be permitted to visit the forum. There's already information on how to ban appeal in game (it's given when banned, a button on the bottom of the ban dialog) so they hold no reason to come here and risk the same behaviour that landed them their punishment.

It was announced in the News thread and I very greatly recall a couple users flipping out about it, I just don't know if it was ever a necessary line of punishment for some.

Can we at least hope that you will consider merging both kind of bans somehow?

Things like harassment, heavy racism menaces and hoping somebody to be dead need to be punished on both sides, in other case it's pointless IMHO.

Severe rule breakers on the forum now run the risk of earning in-game bans alongside forum mutes. This will only be for extreme cases; honest or small mistakes won't earn an in-game ban.

Exactly this. Of course small things like spam or double posting wouldn't earn it, and it'd be slightly pointless to keep hackers off the forum since you can't exactly make your icons fly lol. But these cases like quoted, the spread of X-rated material or shock sites, etc....
