My suggestion isn't about the look. It's about hot threads in general and the administrators can decide the look.

Can't you just look at the number of replies in a thread and see if it's over 200, or is that too much work for you

You're missing the point, and just because other forums may have hot threads doesn't mean it's a good idea in this case when you can clearly see the post number on a thread
