Items are surely a bigger reward for many players than badges or titles. I understand the admins' argument for selling them instead of giving them away for free. Also, the number of items per event has really grown too big. However, it seems that not being able to win items will make many players lose interest in the events.

How about a compromise? Let players get the new items in the event, and put the old ones up for sale for players who are new or missed them in previous events.

(Side note: a "don't display avatars and badges on profiles" option would be nice. If someone has several badges and a forum avatar, it can take a fairly long time to load their profile.)
