This issue may be slightly late to discuss but from searching both the official forums and CFM I could find very few threads discussing it from the past year so I think it's overdue. Anyway, I've been playing bootcamp fairly regularly for the past year, and especially in the past month. As I've become more accustomed to the mode I've kept track of the map rotation as knowing the various map makers and their styles, as well as determining the relative age of a map using its number, is helpful when it comes to the completion of said maps. Because of this I've noticed a slight variance in today's map rotation and what I remember from around late 2012-early 2013. Of course this is to be expected as the mode matures but I distinctly remembered a good number of quality maps oddly absent from rotation. So I did a bit of digging up and came across this. While I've always been well aware of a select few maps being removed from bootcamp rotation, chiefly for difficulty reasons, I've briefly scanned the maps listed in linked pastebin through utility and was fairly astounded to find there many of the fun, challenging maps I've familiarized myself with over a year ago. The sheer amount of the maps that have been removed from rotation within the same period of time ties into a larger issue with bootcamp. Scanning through the categories of bootcamp maps on CFM I've counted a grand total of three maps in the P3 category since the total map count hit the 4 million mark. The P13 category obviously contains far more maps from that time period but they still cover only around a page and a half out of the 12 and a half total. Since from my recollection the total map count hit 4000000 at around the same point the maps linked were depermed and discounting any edits of older maps that may have been permed since then, there have then been more maps removed from bootcamp rotation than added to since that time. As I understand it, bootcamp serves to provide players with new challenges through exploiting the numerous glitches found in the game's physics engine to their fullest. Obviously as the mode gets older, new and more complex glitches and techniques become harder to find/develop, making quality maps harder to produce. However, it is always possible to recombine and modify existing techniques and exploits within newer maps so that they would by no means be considered generic. The bootcamp submission process in its current state seems to operate on a "who used it first" basis (some of the older maps actually disregard the no shaman objects, no decorations, etc rules that are currently in place) and while this may be a useful approach to maintain originality adhering to it too strictly accomplishes the opposite as the inflow of new maps slows down to a crawl. It makes perfect sense for the requirements of a bootcamp map to get stricter with time but in my opinion they should be far less strict than they are now because it feels to me that they're accomplishing the opposite of what they were intended for. I'm not sure if discussing this as an issue will have any impact but I personally hope to see more variety within bootcamp in the future and by variety I mean a steadier flow of new maps. |

You make a few points that I recognize clearly.. mostly the "who used it first" question is something that may or may not be applied too strictly. When has an obstacle already been used elsewhere and when is it a variation that's new enough to be considered not a copy? Personally I think it wouldn't hurt to be a bit more lax in this respect. On the other hand, I'm very happy with P13. I guess this is a good discussion to have. |

Lemodile a dit : Concerning P3 and P13 could someone please clarify the difference between those two categories? Because I can't possibly be the only person who thinks that as far as creativity, uniqueness and general gameplay qualities are concerned P13 is superior in almost every way imaginable. and yes I'm aware of how old this topic is but the general subject is just as relevant now as it was when I made this. |
