Nintendo is the heart and soul of gaming. Other video game companies have risen and fallen, come and gone but Nintendo's been playing at the very highest level since the industry began. In its early history it was a card game company; and then a toy company. But in 1974 they purchased the rights for the Magnavox Odyssey (the first ever video game console) to be distributed in Japan. Meaning they introduced home video games to Japan. This was the first but in retrospect very tiny achievement for this truly amazing company. Around this time, they hired Shigeru Miyamoto, who went on to become the GREATEST video game designer of all time. The Walt Disney of video games! In 1975, the mighty Nintendo introduced the Colour TV-Game, a built-in Pong console. Built-in Pong consoles were basically all video games were at the time. However, the Colour TV-Game's legacy is often overlooked (probably because it was only released in Japan), it was the best-selling video game console in the industry's ancient pre-Atari 2600 history. More than the more-celebrated Odyssey, Atari's own Pong console and even the Fairchild Channel F. But that was all absolutely nothing compared to what was to come. When the industry boomed in 1977 with the Atari 2600, Nintendo decided to opt-out of the console market. Nintendo had been working on video game titles since 1975, but in 1979, Miyamoto shook the industry with the legendary arcade game 'Donkey Kong'. This game featured the first appearance of the industry's most beloved character: Mario! This game itself will forever go down in the arcade's history. It was ported to every console on the market not least the Atari 2600, ColecoVision, Intellivision etc. which were the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U of the day. Coleco even tried to buy the franchise altogether for a very handsome sum. But Nintendo made the very smart decision of turning that offer down. In that same generation, Nintendo introduced the Game & Watch. It was one of the first video game handhelds. Not the first, that was Milton Bradley's Microvision, but definitely the first commercially successful. Another famous game in this generation (1977-1983) Nintendo designed was Mario Bros. a hugely successful arcade game and ported to the Atari 2600 and 5200 and Nintendo's own Game & Watch. But here's where gamers, if they weren't so pig-ignorant of video game history, ought to be forever indebted to Nintendo. In 1982-83, due to an over-saturated market full of poor-quality games, summed up with Atari's terrible Pac-Man port and the horrendous E.T game, the video game crash of 1983 occurred. The market completely collapsed. People stopped buying video games. It looked like its time was over. It was just a fad. Think about it, video games permanently consigned to the history as a lame failed invention. But no! In 1983, Nintendo released the Famicom (in the West the Nintendo Entertainment System [NES]) in Japan. It's genius business technique was to market the console as a 'toy'. Well guess what? It worked like magic! And when Nintendo released it in North America and Europe in 1985 and 86 respectively, the video game industry was well and truly back. Brilliant titles came out around this times for this system: Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, Mother/Earthbound, Castlevania etc. The glorious NES blew all its competition (SEGA Master System and Atari 7800) out the water. It ruled the entertainment industry in the 80s and was still doing well into the early 90s. It is often listed as the greatest video game console off all time. Without it, video games would be nothing! The fourth generation of video games was one of competition for Nintendo. It was quite late to the 16-bit party, there was the TurboGrafx-16 and Nintendo's greatest rival, SEGA, with its Mega Drive and its beloved mascot Sonic the Hedgehog. But in 1990, our mighty company came out with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Some of Nintendo's greatest ever games were for this system: Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Kirby, Earthbound, Super Castlevania 4 etc Nintendo still won the war, it pipped the SEGA Mega Drive 49million units sold to 40million. Another revolutionary accomplishment from Nintendo at this time was the release of the Game Boy in 1989. It would set the precedent as the most revolutionary video game handheld, selling an astonishing 118million units and blowing the SEGA Game Gear and Atari Lynx completely out of the water. The fifth generation of video game history wasn't as successful as previous generations for Nintendo, but there were still many proud moments. They were once again late to the party for 32 and 64-bit gaming. There was the 3DO, the Atari Jaguar, the SEGA Saturn and the legendary Playstation. But Nintendo were a force to be reckoned when they came out with the Nintendo 64 in 1995. Nintendo 64, as always, had amazing games. Most notably Super Smash Bros. Although the Playstation wiped the floor with the N64 in terms of sales, I would argue Nintendo's console had better games and better capabilities. Nintendo still completely dominated the handheld market, releasing the Game Boy Colour in 1998. They also started the second best-selling video game franchise of all time (after their own Mario): Pokemon! Which took the world by storm. The sixth generation was probably Nintendo's most competitive yet. They still weren't quite done with their old rival SEGA who had the Dreamcast, but it was Playstation 2 and even the Xbox which attacked Nintendo from all angles. But Nintendo had the Gamecube released in 2001. The Gamecube had some amazing games, but it couldn't beat the Xbox and had nothing on the PS2. Nevertheless, our beloved company still dominated the handheld market with the Game Boy Advance. The seventh generation was when Nintendo reclaimed their place as King. The Nintendo Wii released in 2006 has all sorts of fun features, and came out with amazing games as usual. The whole Xbox 360 vs PS3 debate was a load of rubbish, the Wii sold more copies. The Nintendo DS came out in 2004, which I would argue is the greatest handheld of all time even with its competition in the PSP. And now we have the current generation, the Wii U, although got off to a slow start, is really beginning to pick up pace. It's neck and neck with the PS4. Xbox One sucks ;) And the Nintendo 3DS destroys the PS Vita as usual. There's loads of amazing achievements Nintendo has made that I haven't gone over. But I think I've said enough to convince you that Nintendo is the greatest video game company right? To all you Sony, Microsoft and PC noobs, Nintendo is heart and soul of gaming Nintendo ruled the industry since it began Nintendo will outlive and defeat all its competition WE ARE NINTENDO YOU CANNOT BEAT US Dernière modification le 1477098420000 |

Nintendo? All I can say is ![]() Ah, the Gameboy Camera. Always wish I had one. ALL OF THOSE ANTI-PIRACY SCREENS. NotToMentionThatTheyWouldSometimesHappenOnLegitimateCartridges Seriously, imagine going to play a game on your TV and one of these popping up Like they may not seem as bad here but imagine people who enjoy playing video games in a dark room at night SEEING THIS ON A FULL SCREEN. ![]() ![]() ![]() Does this put things into a better perspective for you: ![]() And even if you don't find these creepy, this kind of fear is actually a genuine fear in lots of people and I know that I'd probably never touch a cartridge again if this happened to me. I like older Nintendo because of the "shocking" Easter eggs they had, but I don't hate present-day Nintendo. They're still fine. Dernière modification le 1423139040000 |
