I agree its potrayal of bdsm is a load of rubbish but I disagree with what you said (on the thread) about the movie promoting abuse and sexual assault. just featuring such things doesn't equate to the film actively supporting it. plenty of movies are based around such content but that doesn't mean they're encouraging people to go do it.

It can be perceived as promotion however. Girls see that and they tell boys "oh, you should be like Christian Grey." Bam.
And you have tons of mindless people watching it thinking this is what BDSM is when it isn't, and getting the wrong idea about something that is a healthy lifestyle.
So it's a disgusting mess all around.

well I'd like to have faith in both adult women and men (as the movie's rated only for mature audiences and not potentially naiive kids) realising both the book and movie are just silly works of fantasy and not blueprints one should use in constructing their actual relationships

edit: okay, I didn't mean to start anything, just wanted to get that small point across. I can see why the other sides of the argument hold some weight as well and agree it's overall a bad thing. just not as terribly bad as it could appear to be on the surface.

The thread was locked because the movie was rated R, and I think as long as I don't touch on aspects of the BDSM lifestyle it should be alright. All I've said is that it is a healthy thing and not something that is shameful.
But feel free to report if it's an issue.
E - Actually, to settle your concerns, I just contacted a sentinel on Skype to check the conversation. :P

I'd like to as well, truthfully. But adults aren't the problem I see here.
Problem is impressionable kids are gonna get their hands on it. I know a lot of fourteen year olds who have read the book just because everyone else has. They're literally selling T-shirts which say "Looking for Mr. Grey" in the juniors section of stores:

...now that's just a bloody shame. it's a difficult problem to balance because, on the one hand, there's the issue of freedom of speech and what people should be allowed to make/produce but on the other there's children being put at risk because they're unable to realise fictional relationships like that are harmful in reality

I'm dropping it here as I've been advised by a sentinel to try to steer away from this subject, which is fair enough. But hopefully this is some food for thought.
If you're curious enough, send me a PM and I'll send you some links and information which features every trigger, rape scene and inaccurate portrayal of BDSM in the book and you can judge for yourself.
