Kids can deal with their own problems, yes. But that doesn't apply to everyone.
There still will be kids who was cause a giant fuss all because someone may have said "oh fuck".

The game is recommended 13+ and most likely will stay that way.
Not to mention, COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) which basically says that kids have to be 13+ to play certain things that may contain content harmful to minors (anyone under 18).
I'm not sure if COPPA is just in America, but it still says things that control people.

COPPA is an american law. ''it applies to the online collection of personal information by persons or entities under U.S. jurisdiction from children under 13 years of age. ''

Kids who play this game should expect profanity and such because they should know that the Internet is not always kid-friendly. If they have any issue with it, they can always /ignore the specific person and there's always the chat filter. It's there for a reason.

Typically, don't make it seem others get to you and move on from what has been said or seen. You can't control another or force someone to stop how they treat you. But if you'd like to not interfere, then do not engage. Simple.

There's a lot of individuals that look for respect in others' that they don't know very well and have just met. if you know someone long enough and make lewd or wrongful "jokes" even though you knew that person and someone else finds it offending and repulsive - don't let that person get on your rough side. Simply explain and don't be rude about it, unless you want to open to a backfire of them and others around you.

To keep it standard - those who are introduced to social medias, games, forums, etc should know the consequences and if they don't like the atmosphere, then there's no need to stick around long enough to make judgemental points or anything for that matter. These days, people of all ages know how things are taken seriously.

As many have said They could lie about their age. If to disable the chat for people under 13 would make them probably make new accounts. Plus what is the language filter for then? You should still let the people under the age of 13 play I believe. Though asking them about their age on the registration page is of need and isn't. I believe as well that Atelier should not let people choose the enable/disable language filter if they're under the age of 13.

In my experience, if mods on "certain sites" find someone believed to be underage or known to be underage, their IP is locked from the site. But TFM is too big and if ages were based on speculation alone I might be banned despite being almost 20 /v/

It's too easy to fake age, if you want to stay on internet, be capable of tolerating insults.

i think people are actually less offended these days
50 years ago it was considered offensive for a black person to sit in the front of a bus

Yeah, but now its offensive for men to open their legs on the bus, so really its a question of whats more absurd.

Here is a good solution, just make a parent thingy that can turn the chat on and off. Doesn't matter about the age. It's just a problem solved about the swearing.

I think this would be the best solution and is the lest harmful towards the chat

I don't think the chat needs any restrictions. Unless you want it to turn into AJ of course.
At the start of the game, just put a 13+ warning, huge on the screen. Mention the fact that there is cussing and inappropiate topics. Then, let anyone join, no matter their age. If they feel overwhelmed by the inappropiate content and all, they have at least been warned beforehand.
