Ok, so now that this is an issue again, please keep in mind that not only the U.S. will be affected by this, but just anyone with access to the internet.

Why is Net Neutrality such a big deal? Think about it like this...

Say you buy a laptop. This hypothetical laptop cost you around $200. You'd expect the whole package, but no.
This hypothetical laptop does not have any keys on it, so you must buy the keys in a separate package. You'd have to buy number pad keys that would be say $40, then maybe 'QWERTYUIOP' keys which would cost you $65 dollars, and so forth.

Basically, if Net Neutrality is removed then some of you have the potential of losing access to sites that simply cannot afford to pay for faster lanes (as in the time it takes to load) and you'd have to probably have to pay just to watch a video or to access social media.

Like I mentioned earlier, despite the fact that this is a bill based in the U.S., the majority will feel the impact at some point.

I felt the need to bump this up because this is a very important crisis we are facing here in the United States and potentially globally. The reason why ISP's (Internet Service Providers) want to pass this is because as of now, all of those companies have to share data and servers with eachother; you could be an AT&T costumer and spend all of your time and money using Verizon content and companies absolutely hate that.

Taking away Net Neutrality is essentially the same as taking away online freedom of speech because then you'll be dictated by companies into what content you can view and which you cannot, just like you see with cable and phone companies in this day and age. The internet is the most important thing in our era and that may sound exaggerated but it is the truth -- it offers us complete and utter freedom. Tearing down this open web of free information will be the introduction of more bad things to come.

So what happened? I have no idea since I'm in the uk, will it effect everyone or just people in the US?

it can affect other countries.

for example, if isp's block competitors like netflix and netflix loses money, they could shut down and people from other countries won't be able to use netflix anymore since it's us based.

passing over the copypasta from the locked thread to keep people aware on this thread who may be reading it. apologies on the late posting and notifying. this is seriously important as of now and looks that this wont have any breaks unless we show resistance.

The vote is December 14th. The FCC and your ISP want to impose limits on a free internet; in other words, parcel it off into DLC like packages that cost you more, restrict parts of it, and selectively decide what you can and can't do on-line.

Some examples of what we are facing if Net Neutrality falls:

  • You could lose the option of choosing where to shop on-line, or have to pay more for the right to shop at your favorite site

  • Popular sites like Netflix, Youtube, Spotify, could be throttled or blocked depending on your plan or geographic location

  • Anime streaming sites like Crunchroll and Funimation could suffer at the hands of powerful competing service Amazon Strike

  • You could even lose access to your favorite adult-websites

Plus many more that could be listed and the list could go on, but these are some of the few.

What you can do to help:

https://www.battleforthenet.com/ - basically the main page for fighting aganist it. Includes useful information on what the Net Neutrality is and what we can do aganist about it to avoid, including to make a call to The Congress.

https://www.savetheinternet.com/sti-home International version of you can show your resistance aganist it by signing the petition, making the call and sharing the word about it.

There are currently five people voting on this issue. As it stands, they will repeal Net Neutrality. (3 Republicans are voting to abolish, 2 Democrats are voting to keep it)

Look up your Representative and look up your Senator and let them know your stance on the issue.

This affects us all. DO. YOUR. PART.

not only this, but other countries may look at the US and how much money they're making. It's a domino-chain of effect; they'll start trying it out too and before you know it everyone will be doing it.
Sigh. Progress is a double-edged sword. You do something cool and years later a ton of greedy people use it for their own benefit...

Net Neutrality got repealed recently.

I was pretty bummed about it.

But I think whoever repealed it was more happy to see it go than I am sad to lose it.

So whatever.

(but really they shouldn't have done that it's gonna be a problem in doing my school research if this goes worldwide plus, we probably won't even be able to talk like this without paying just to type a sentence)
