If you want to get on a specific route, you have to pay attention to the colors of the hearts you earn; this is from replying to a text with positive reaction to the character.
Yoosung has Green Hearts
Jaehae has brownish ones
Zen is gray
Jumin is purple
707 is red
It's unknown whether this is a glitch or not, but it's possible to earn pure white hearts in a few responses.

Being nice to Yoosung is amazing of you and all, but if you're aiming for someone else, try choosing another response that correlates to a different character rather than directly to Yoosung. Whenever Yoosung is being teased, siding with Yoosung will grow your relationship with Yoosung closer. So, unfortunately, you may have to side with someone else although it's devastating :(

Small hints (note: may change over time) to help with specific charcters
Yoosung: Act very nice and side with him often
Zen: Awe over Zen when you can
Jumin: Have a liking for cats and be serious; even when he's unfair around Jaehae, still side with him.
Jaehae: Slightly fangirl with her over Zen, but don't act attached to Zen; respond to her daily life
707: Side with him on jokes and laugh (lol, lolol, etc)

Main source is the wiki and a few Tumblr blogs; but are quite reliable.

*last edit: There are also times when you can break hearts, which lowers their heart amount you have collected. I don't know too much about this, but try to avoid talking behind backs even if your character isn't in the conversation. You are allowed to break a character's heart if they're not the route you're currently taking.

I was taking a chance and flirting with everyone and it seems like Yoosung dropped his pants first, so this just means I'll try his route first and go purely for the others next.

I tried telling a friend of mine about Mystic Messenger, a game with attractive characters who you bond with to the extent of them calling/texting you...and this was the response I got from them and I still haven't replied, HAHA...
