Don't worry, His punishment was dished out by the mobs of angry people rather then court. Ruined his business, Harassed all of his family regardless of affiliation, and now he's likely to remain in hiding forever. His punishment is out there still collecting more things to it.

And i noticed that guy said that so i went outside and said "Hey what are you doing?" "This is my cat" And the old man looked at me and said "Oh i was just walking my dog." People don't care about other animals anymore.

The whole reason humanity even evolved was because of our prey drive. We're instinctual hunters; all of us, just like house cats, only we're more mentally sophisticated to chew on strings for fun. The only difference in our modern times is that we went from physically hunting animals to hunting other, more novel things, in both physical and metaphorical ways. The entire premise of Transformice is a great example - a player, especially a shaman, uses their problem solving capabilities to obtain the quarry - the virtual cheese.
Photographers shoot animals and objects as well - only with cameras. Realistic video games act as virtual hunting simulations. Mankind has always had a genetic instinct to hunt, not necessarily to kill but to pursue after something to make our lives seem fulfilling. For our primal ancestors, that was killing megafauna, but in modern times, that encompasses many other things, although the tradition of hunting animals still lives on. A human that doesn't strive to go after or hunt something simply develops boredom and eventually loses sanity.

That said, the irony of trophy hunting is that the money gained through the market of it is the money used to fund conservation efforts. You may think it's wrong that people kill something for fun, but that sort of activity is the primary source of funding for conservation efforts. If you completely ban trophy hunting which is usually supposed to be regulated anyway, then you don't have enough funding to protect the entire species or region, and you end up with criminals who don't give two shits for regulations and end up poaching all the rest of the species to extinction. It may seem harsh that things have to die (although when have organisms not died?) but that's the way the system works. You break the system by regulating it with what you believe to be a form of moral righteousness that's inconsiderate of the system, and you only end up with a bigger mess involving undesired consequences. In this case, it would be even more dead animals and entire extinctions of species.

And with all that said, I do have three problems and three problems only with this: the lion was hunted in an inhumane manner. A hunter must shoot to kill on the first shot to prevent prolonged suffering. The dentist did not. The result is that the lion ended up traveling miles for hours/days (I can't remember) with a projectile in its leg. That is wrong.
My second problem stems from the fact he killed the wrong animal. Obviously, Cecil was supposed to be protected. There are other lions who are genetically or physically weaker which are allowed to be shot for the benefit of the rest of the population. Think of it like trimming a tree or a bush. If you don't trim off the sick or dead branches, the entire tree suffers and sometimes even dies because the sick, old, and dying put too much of a strain on the plant. A population of animals works the same way. It's artificial darwinism, a harsh but necessary maintenance procedure required for recovering megafauna populations. Cecil, however, was one of the healthier members of the population, in addition to being a celebrity animal.

And my last problem is not with the slaying, but the outrageous coverage. This is one animal. Billions of animals die every year, including many that are unfairly killed and are even more endangered. Dying populations of rare rattlesnakes are the best example. Someone literally posted a picture on Facebook of a federally protected timber rattlesnake that was inhumanely killed a mere day after the slaying of the lion and literally nearly nobody gave a shit. There's more lions than there are timber rattlesnakes - unlike the lions, timber rattlesnakes are officially listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as endangered. And even more of those snakes are killed for no good reason every year than lions die a year. Yet nobody cares. But God forbid someone kills a "majestic" mammal. The media, and a majority of the population are zoological bigots. It's not about "protecting animals;" it never was. This is about protecting everyone's favorite animals. There's no rationale behind that; it serves no logical purpose to save an animal just because you like it. if you were a real, hardcore animal lover, you would understand the purpose of protecting ALL animals because of the importance of their niches in the natural system of the environment, and you would apply logical reasoning in the methods of preserving and maintaining ecosystems which are necessary for some purpose. And under that note, there's more important things than a lion which are significantly ignored only because the media cares about ratings, and ratings are fueled by the majority's initial, emotional and irrational response as opposed to deep critical thinking and logic. It's especially easy to get ratings about animals like lions because a lot of people all too often anthropomorphize them. Who doesn't like to think of cats as a kind of people? They're technically not, but nobody wants to hear that.
Anyway, that's my philosophical two cents.

tl;dr: People are instinctually bound to hunt something, so killing animals isn't some surprise. Trophy hunting ironically helps conservation efforts in more ways that one; Cecil undoubtedly shouldn't have been killed, but the coverage and reactions are overblown and hypocritical because there's bigger issues than one measly lion.
