Forum: remove public message count |

Message counting inspires people posting useless posts to get to a certain number/stack a lot to show others how "cool" they are, wich is obviously bad for the community. At the same time this feature has nothing positive about it. So the idea is to remove it, making this information available only to atelier801 stuff. Dernière modification le 1459359960000 |

/no support Yes, the counting is sometimes abused but rarely and it been here for a long time. In my point of view, the comment counts is sorta of organized and quite fine the way it is. I think there should be a option where you can see the numbers or not. So people who like the comment numbers will be able to see them. |

winterflurry a dit : Of course, for english community it is kind of a rare thing, but for smaller communities it is a pure cancer. At the moment up to 80% of posts on russian community forum are just pointless flood posts, written only to make some "cool" numbers like 1337. At the same time this feature does nothing good for the community. Literally, nothing. People are always trying to make up some kind of a rating system, just for the sake of it. The problem with posts' counting appeared on first forums quite a while ago, when people, by having no rating system made it up using post counts, causing traditional forums to die out because of inflated posts. At some point any type of discussion would be destroyed by people, trying to make more posts, instead of discussing the topic. Thats why at some point anonymous imageboards took over. Then discussion platforms with ratings/karma (e.g. reddit) appeared. Sure posts counting wasn't the only problem (also not the main issue), but it was one of the things, wich caused collapse. For A801 forums it may also become a problem at some point. Smaller communities are already doomed, and one day it might become a big deal for larger ones, such as BR and EN. I mean thats a common problem for all other internet forum platforms and you shouldn't ignore this experience. Dernière modification le 1459418160000 |

I think this is a good idea, since the message count doesn't really serve any purpose |

Tippyn a dit : It doesn't add anything to the functionality on the user side. It doesn't influence your ability to post, it doesn't change the way you communicate, because in a normal human conversation irl and online the amount of phrases (posts) doesn't have any role whatsoever. /no support spamming just to get the post count up hasn't really been a huge issue on here from what i've seen. it's been on here since the beginning, and it shouldn't be removed now. |

I actually did quite a bit of research into this (whether to display post count or not, where, and what effect it has on the community) before when i was developing and designing some forum software, and while it varied a lot between community there was a distinct correlation between certain forums. Forums have however evolved over the past few years a lot - going more for the short, quick, social aspects of discussion rather than keeping things long term. That said, with the café ingame and the forums designed to be used like this as they are now, they're still acting like a classic long-term-discussion forum where lots of posts is expected over so much time. Basically, what Atelier 801 have already implemented into these forums was the best compromise between having a post count and keeping people interactive with genuine purpose in their posts - having the post count display only on their profile. It's redundant to have the post count display on every post, but there's no benefit to getting rid of it being available completely - sure people spam for posts but any genuine spam is moderated and everything should be able to contribute to a discussion in some way (with the exception of forum games and people saying "/support" in suggestions threads perhaps, each of which can be solved with a technical solution). However there are benefits to keeping it: letting people "compete" with eachother for posts if they want to (which is the best form of gamification a service can have, even better since it's a game forum) and ultimately drives up posts and discussions for the forums, lets you have a good gauge of how active a user has been in their time in the community (although this isn't always truly reflective, for example Haruhitastic has roughly 60 times Makinit's post count despite them having been around the community for the same amount of time), and a few other minor things. In the end of the day it comes down to this: it doesn't hurt anyone, and it only really matters if you personally care about other people's post counts. |

The problem that's described in this thread seems to be more related to lack of active forum staff, rather than forum post count being the cause of these useless spam games. If people get sanctioned, they'll think twice before posting useless stuff. When their posts actually contribute to the discussion, there's no reason to complain. Also this: Shamousey a dit : On a lot of forums (perhaps not specifically on these forums) someone's post count can give their forum posts more weight during a discussion, in the perspective of a layman. High forum count can be associated with know-how or experience about the particular subject. You're more likely to believe or listen to someone with a high post count compared to someone that only recently started posting. So with that all said, I don't support this suggestion. |
