I think it would be very helpful for many reasons, if we can see how many members in the tribe are using/on the forums.

Something like this will show up next to the tribe's name. --> [Tribe Name] Online : X .

Some additional detail would help a lot here..

You want to see how many tribe members are currently on the forums. Do you want to see this in the tribe window in game or on the forums itself? You do mention you want to show it up next to the tribe's name, but that doesn't clear up much.

All in all it might be an interesting idea to gather this sort of information, as long as the (new) forums will have some privacy settings that allow you to hide your online status. I'm more leaning towards having this sort of info displayed on the forums rather than in game though. It's not uncommon for forums to have an Online User Count, and often also an Online Friends count. Online Tribe Member count fits in that list.
