Dracoleaf a dit :
While a delete button wouldn't entirely hurt, what's stopping people from reporting their own posts and/or editing the second+ post to make it clear the double+ post was accidental?

From my own experience I can say that there are not many people who do that because they are simply not aware of the fact that they can report such posts, nor read the announcements and forum rules because it may sound like a waste of time to them. I sometimes find edited posts months after they were posted.

I'll just say what I said on the Romanian forums, i.e that despite being able to delete your own post, you should not forget that sentinels would be still able to view the deleted post and sanction accordingly (in case a rule was broken, except double post since in most cases it's innocent).
So do not think that having a delete option would give you the ability to bypass a potential sanction.

Spam a bit, delete.
Talk inappropriately for a bit, delete.
Be incredibly rude a lot, delete.

If you take it that way, you could do the same thing if you simply edit your post, while the delete function would be irreversible and still view-able by sents.

This would really help with accidental double-posting.

I sometimes find edited posts months after they were posted.

Wouldn't that mean they don't know the rules and wouldn't know that double posting isn't allowed in most cases, despite accidentally double-posting? (Their late edit meaning they finally read the forum rules and/or know how to use the forum?) Their first sanction for double posting would most likely be a warning that tells them not to double post, how to edit posts and may or may not direct them to the forum rules. Warnings should also be thought as Private Messages (that can get worse, but still.).

Also, if a delete button were to be added, wouldn't that go with the edit/report buttons? Seems like they won't find that button either. In the case they find that button too late, but their double post hasn't been moderated and sanctioned, sentinels would moderate but not sanction the post if it's an old post (from when I was a forum mod, at least.) as there was a chance the user could have learned the forum rules by then but forgot about their old double post? Another thing when I was with staff, double posts were some of the easiest reports to deal with, I never found them time consuming or (entirely?) difficult to decide what to do with them either.

Just gonna pop in and say that users were never permitted to remove their own posts, going back to the vBulletin forums which I was sentinel on; so it's quite clear that Tigrounette doesn't want the options (a la "no signatures" or "no gif avatars")

Wait why would we be muted if we double posted then deleted it?

Not specifically.
There are many people who only edit their posts, instead of also reporting them. It would look better if you were able to delete that post, instead of having a sent moderate it, especially if you accidentally post like 3-4 comments in a row. It makes the forum overall look much cleaner in my opinion and sentinels would be still able to view a deleted post and sanction a user if necessary.

This extends to modifying the forum user interface as well, which would consist of adding clear buttons for editing, deleting and reporting a post.
Each of these buttons must be also placed strategically in order to make it easy and clear to all users.
The current system doesn't seem to prove to be effective for those who double post on purpose because they simply don't know that they have an "edit" button or that they should use it to avoid double-posting at all. At least I think the idea is worth a try.

You are not being sanctioned for it at the beginning, you might get a warning so that you are aware that there's an edit button and only sanctioned if you constantly keep double-posting despite being warned.
Of course you get no warning at all if the double post was accidental.

I think that if someone does a mean post on a random thread then deletes it (considering that his post is not reported), sentinels won't be able to check it because they cannot look into every thread, post by post.
That would be okay only if they could have their special place to check out all of these deleted posts

Still, /no support.

For some you can, but what about spam and double, triple, etc. posting? You can't edit your way out of that.

And even if deleted posts can still be seen, chances are you'll be aware that a person spammed much faster if they couldn't delete their posts, had them open to the public, and have the regular users who see them report them. You did just say that you sometimes find edited posts months after they were there, so how will you find the deleted posts any easier? They should be kept in the open where anyone who sees it can report it.

This is giving a bit too much to the players. If you really don't want your post on something, you can just edit it and say "Delete" or something along those lines. Even if the person doesn't know it can be reported to be deleted faster, it'll eventually be moderated or just stay that way.

This really isn't needed. It's just going a bit too far.

The same thing applies if they simply edit them out, then.
Sentinels won't be able to see what the user previously wrote prior to editing their post out.

It's not about „finding” them, why would I need to find an accidental double post which was deleted?

That would make some threads in this forum look more hectic and this wouldn't be very appealing to the new user, I believe.
Another possible solution to avoid multiple posting would be merging the posts into a single one automatically.

Back to the delete button: if not the players themselves, then at least sentinels should be able to have this feature.
