you dont actually have to play one round i got it the minute i logged in

I personally got it immediately when I logged in, multiple hours after connecting my account to the mobile game.

No. It's twenty hours.

Did the mute system update or? Apparently my friend got muted for something, and they aren't able to speak in the tribe chat or whisper either. Meaning that they're muted from even speaking at all. I don't remember this happening to me before when I got muted.

The system has been updated, yes; to prevent users evading mutes by using /t and having friends share it (a form of mute evasion).

You have minimalist mode on, which does that to help reduce lag
You can turn it off by going into "settings", which is the cog
