Chapter 14: Cross my Heart, Hope to Die

Shard wouldn't stop pestering Foxie as they searched the barren wasteland. “Just admit it.” he seemed to chant in rhythm, grinning and being just about as annoying as a fruit fly. Foxie only strove to refrain from trying to swat him away.
“Would you stop it already? I'm sick of this and I thought you'd be more mature than you're acting, but you seem to be just as mature as a toddler!” She was driven to the point where she pulled her hair in utter frustration, grunting with her teeth gritted.
“Yeah, a toddler saves you from a rampaging ghost every day.” Shard said sarcastically.
“Seriously, what's your deal?” she said, her voice getting angrier by every additional word.
Shard's grin faded away. “What's my deal...?” His pace slowed and he stalled by pretending to look around some more.
“Spit it out, you fuzzy demon.”
Shard almost hissed at that comment. “Gee, thanks.” he said and continued to hesitate for a moment, then sighed.
“What, what's the problem now?”
“Imagine growing up, poor and nearly dead from starvation and freezing from a run down home... Seeing your parents leave one day to find some more food... And then...” Shard stopped and took a moment to breathe.
“And then... What...?”
He seemed to hoarsely whisper the rest. “They never return... And you find out they died for a reason that no one knows...”
“Actually... My parents died in the war... When I found out...” Her vision blurred from newly formed tears.
“I'm so sorry... I won't tell or mention it again, promise.” Shard mumbled to her. She was too busy thinking about her parents to register the sentence.
Shard suddenly stopped and motioned for Fox to stop, as well.
“What...?”
“Shush! Something's coming!” he whispered and started looking around. “It's hard to tell where it's coming from...”
“Oh no... Not another-”
A screech cut off her voice. Shard knew what it was. “Play dead if you want to live, Fox.” he said as Fox got on the ground in a convincing position.
“How's that...”
“Fine.” he said and started looking around, listening to where the squeals came from.
“What are you doing?! Aren't you supposed to play dead?!”
“You, not me. I'm gonna slay this dead annoyance once and for all.” he lifted his blade and pointed it in the direction of the noises that grew louder than ever, until the phantom finally was visible as it rocketed towards Shard.
Shard swiped the blade at the phantom, which did nothing to his surprise. “Ohhh... I hope I never said I had the memory of an elephant... Because I would have remembered about that...” he grunted as he started running around, trying to avoid the enraged apparition. “Okay, bad idea, bad idea!” he shouted.
“Shard!” Foxie shouted, getting up and not caring about what he had told her. The phantom was too focused on the black mouse that was running around frantically to notice her get up.
“Well... Now I know what it's like to make a life and death decision...” she said as she raced in her mind for a plan.
