Chapter 15: The Way Out

Foxie couldn't hesitate any longer. “Ahh... Forget it, I'll just go with my gut.” she said as she ran into the fray.
“What the hell are you doing?!” Shard shouted, his eyes filled with rage, yet slight relief.
They ran alongside each other every which way, the phantom not showing any signs of giving up the chase. “I have a plan!”
“That phantom is not gonna get tired of flying after us!” Shard shouted, almost positive that was what she had been thinking.
“I DON'T have a plan!” she responded sorrowfully. “You?”
“Maybe, but just one...” he said as he took a sharp turn and pushed Foxie with him, then stopped.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” Foxie shouted, her eyes as wide as ever and her heart racing, knowing this would be the death of them both. She painfully watched the phantom take the sharp turn as well and barely realized that Shard's plan was in motion.
“This!” he screamed as he grabbed her hand and yanked her out of the way along with himself, not even noticing the slight blush that followed on the confused mouse's face. He quickly told her after, “I'm going to make it look like I killed us both, there's no time to explain it anymore!” he shouted as he watched the ghost turn back around and get ready to ram into them.
“Wait, wha-” Foxie started, but stopped and went along with it.
Shard grabbed his blade and with great force plunged it at Fox, who was horrified that it was actually going to kill her, but it only passed by her side. She knew the plan now and pretended to fall to the ground at her “last breath.” Shard made his best impression at feeling remorse and guilt, then proceeded to “stab” himself, and fell to the ground, dropping his blade.
The phantom scarcely passed him as he fell, and it then turned back around, but didn't charge at them again. It only watched for a moment to see if they would move at all, then squealed and flew away, the sounds fading as it went further and further, until it disappeared.
“Well... That was interesting.” Foxie said solemnly, sitting up and brushing herself off.
“Uh, yeah.” he responded, getting up and grabbing his blade. “I actually didn't think it would work.”
“So you just took a chance of us both dying?” she said angrily.
“We would have been killed anyway, I saved your life. Again. Be happy.”
“I... I guess so...”
“Your white fur makes the blushing very noticeable.”
“Shut u- Wait... What's that...?” she gasped, pointing behind Shard.
Shard turned and couldn't believe what he saw. “Light... The way out... We made it...”
“But we can't leave the others behind, how can we ever find them now, we just ran all over the place!”
“I... I don't know... But we can't miss an opportunity like this...”
“But they'll die!”
Shard stopped for a moment, thinking hard of what consequences each decision would bring. “I have an idea. I'll make a trail of markings with my blade. That way we can follow it back once we get the rest of the group.” he grabbed Foxie's hand and positioned his blade on the ground so it would scratch it. Fox turned away to hide her incredibly visible blushing. “Let's go.” he said as they started walking away from the way out.
The only way out.
