Chapter 17: Time's Up

“It can't just be gone!” Shard shouted, not ready to face the bitter truth.
“Shard, it-”
“IT CAN'T BE, IT JUST CAN'T!” Shard blurted out, pulling on his ears and not even acknowledging his interruption with Serafina, then falling to the ground and burying his face in the ground.
“He be losin' his mind-o...” Piry-O mumbled to Dakota.
“I heard that.” he responded with an annoyed tone.
“It's just... Gone.” Amanda said slowly, her voice at a low whisper. “Gone...”
“We'll never get out of here...” Dakota decided, crossing her arms and looking at her feet.
“We won't...” Amanda said with the same hopeless voice as before.
“I... I never thought I'd lose hope like this...” Snowy said, sitting down and hiding her face in her hands, then silently sobbing.
“There's got to be something to d-” Foxie and Shard stared at each other as they realized they had both said the same thing.
“Uh, go ahead...” Shard said, turning back to the ground.
“R-right... Anyway, there's got to be something to do, something to get us out...” She rubbed her face in case she was blushing again.
“Let's just quit while we're ahead.” Serafina pouted.
“Yeah, just stop searching, curl up and die here.” Dakota joined in miserably.
“Great idea...” Snowy said, finally giving up on being the cheery and happy little mouse that she was “born to be.”
“I agree.” Amanda chimed in softly, her facial expression lost in so many emotions.
So that's what the five of them did. Lie down, and pout, waiting to just die here. Shard and Foxie just sat there together, watching the rest.
“We were so close... How could this have happened...”
“I don't know.” Shard mumbled.
Foxie was at a loss of words from such a hopeless situation. She didn't want to die, not yet. And certainly not here, where she could turn into a ruthless shadow.
Shard sat there, staring at the others, when he nearly jumped at the surprise of a hug. Foxie only made soft sobs and a few squeaks while Shard was trying to comprehend what was going on. If he wasn't such a dark color, he would have just invented the blush fur.
“I don't even understand... The way out was huge, a big gaping hole of light right-” Shard stopped as his eyes followed where he had pointed. The one place that was only black and not red as well.
“What is it?” Foxie said, sitting up again and straightening out her wet face.
“That's a hole.”
“You mean...”
Shard got up. “That's the way out.”
All of the six other mice sprang to their feet in excitement.
Shard took a step forward. “It's really here...”
“We made it...” Foxie gasped.
The group slowly approached the hole. Sure enough, it was the same size and same location as it had been when it was light.
“Why's it so dark?” Snowy asked curiously, looking at the massive hole of darkness.
“I'm not sure...” Shard replied, stopping as the group was only a few steps away.
“Here it is...” Foxie whispered, her voice hoarse.
“Finally...” Serafina said in disbelief.
“The way out...” Amanda chimed in.
“The way back to where we belong...” Snowy added on breathlessly.
“Aye, the way-o out-y... to...”
“Home.” Dakota finished, sending the group forward.
Shard walked out and turned to the group. “Here it is, hom-” he stopped at the sight of the horrified faces he saw and turned to what was supposed to be their world. It was just the same as the horrific place they had just escaped from, but had more features like cliffs, and plenty more phantoms.
“We're still trapped in this chaotic world!” Snowy shouted.
“Sort of...” Shard told her.
“What are you talking about, Shard” Foxie asked, desperate for something to cheer her up.
“This is our home.” He pointed down to a black figure and another black figure, one glowing red. It was a mouse being chased by a phantom. He turned back to the group, knowing exactly what was going on.
“We're too late.”
