Chiara, Draco, Pilsette, Pyjin, Eclipse, Kloure, and Secretive (and everyone else, but I never really knew you), it was a pleasure working with all of you over the last couple of years. I still remember fondly my time as staff. You're amazing people and I know you will be (or are) successful in life. You've impacted the lives of so many others on this game. Love you all!

Why did such a large number of staff suddenly just leave?

I am not 100% sure, but from past experience I would bet they have been generally inactive for some time. After an unspecified amount of time, the staff cleans out its inactive people, and usually welcomes them back if they're active again in the future.

Seems likely. Maybe it has something to do with the staff feedback thread where people remarked on how confusing and unhelpful it was that there were so many (mostly) inactive staff members listed, and those inactive ones decided to step down/become private mods or were removed now.

I pointed out the inactivity of public staff quite some time ago, but it was casually ignored at the time. I don't understand why this is such a big surprise now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No this has nothing to do with all the mods leaving, we always open applications at this time of year. There is not a max amount of mods :)
