Are 'normally' numbered EN rooms going extinct? |

Finally. I've been wating for somebody to make a thread reguarding this issue so I'm going to give my opinion on the subject. The lack of people in normal rooms is real and we can't deny it unfortunately. As older players, I think this subject mainly hurts us the most compared to newer players. When I first started playing this game back around July 2010 I was a room 29 regular, which always had a full room load of about 25-30 mice back when ice was pink and there were no tribes and etc. Then after a few months I moved around to rooms 9 and 14 for reasons I don't remember and I have played in those rooms since so I have just started to notice the lack of people. Lemo probably noticed it earlier since he was a room 18 regular. Rooms 9 and 14 used to be full 24/7 with no problems, but sadly I actually logged on last night into room 9 and it only had 3 mice. But anyways, here's what I think. The lack of people in normal rooms comes down to a few main issues. The first 2 I will list have already been discussed so I won't go into much detail. Minigame addition has a part to play in all this, but personally I don't believe that it's a large part of it. There are definitely more minigame players now than there used to be with just bootcamp, racing, survivor, and tribewar that draw people from the normal rooms for sure. However even with minigames in the past being popular, the rooms would have no problem filling up all the time. The main issuethat I believe is leading to this lack of people in normal rooms nowadays are that there is a bountiful amount of different servers now that draw people who used to play in EN away. Just like someone mentioned above, the community is rude to new people who play in normal rooms. Lets be honest here, if your stats arent reasonable and youre new, the older players wont pay much attention to you and some of them will even be rude, driving people away from these rooms. This idea of a "rude" community however is actually quite irrevelant to the fact that mice are leaving normal rooms because of it because there have always been a few rude people throughout the rooms since I've been playing and I have to disagree that people are leaving due to that fact. Unforunately I don't really think this "problem" of extinct rooms can ever be resolved since everybody enjoys something different about the game and the game is constantly changing/offering new possibilities. We as older players need to start accepting that. We played in regular rooms since that was the only option of play and we found a nice group of fellow friends who all played in the same room as us. But newer players now have different options for gameplay and they are finding their group of friends/fun in different sorts of rooms similar to how we did in our regular rooms long ago. The game is constantly changing (for the worse in my opinion, I actually enjoyed the simplistic style it used to be) and all these new options/servers basically make it impossible for regular rooms to ever be how they were unless they were to get rid of all these gameplay options. And that would clearly cause some controversy. But yea that's my opinion on the subject and I don't like how regular rooms are dying, but I think transformice hit its peak a while ago as a game and it is now actually in the decline stage. Any veteran should be able to see this. I as a older player may see it as a decline, but newer players probably see nothing wrong with it since they don't know what the game used to be like. It's a new age of mouse game lol. |

Thanks so much for this post!!!! This really concretely sums up some things I've been thinking heavily about for the last few weeks. I had a lull in the frequency of my playing for the first bit of the year (AP classes in High school -_- ) but recently (last few weeks) have been back to playing more often. I've been a room 7 reg since I began playing on the Kong server (almost two years ago :'D wow time flies) and was really surprised when I did some "late-night playing" (between 9pm-1am West Coast USA) during which room 7 always used to have around the usual (20-25) (although during peak hours room 7 would get pretty popular with up to 35/40sih on occasion back in the day). But during these non-peak hours, I watched the room literally die completely down to 1 player most every night, which I have not seen happen since back on the Kong Server when it existed!! I even moved from 7 to six and watched the 20-some players in room six all leave and ended up in room 1, which used to always be massive but is now just "normal" (which I consider *used* to be usually around 20-25 for the lower numbered rooms). All in all, TFM changes and I've seen it go thru a number of big ones (I remember all of us flipping out at the server merge when we lost our beloved Kong) but I think this is sorta continuing the trend of TFM losing its community aspects for the sake of "showier" add-ons, which are fun, but really aren't at the core of what this game is about. I personally would think the new Vanilla spawning coupled with EN2 being the default login server (which is annoying) has really created most of this situation. I hope these (especially much of the EN2 stuff) are reversed. (And I would agree that the map rotation isn't what it used to be. Waaaay too many artsy maps that don't really have much gameplay value.) Come visit us in room 7 sometime! Lots of fairly long-time regulars and a friendly environment! |

^ pretty much that Room 2: 7 mice right now. And everyone just plays traitor or forteresse. It's kind of annoying. Everyone wants ratapult and botmj back but nobody goes to #ratapult or #deploy which are the same thing. |

Just counting at this time: Online in total (all communities): 18291 Online non-official minigames #deathmatch : 555 #traitor : 82 #deploy : 76 #football : 75 #pewpew : 63 #ratapult : 48 #towerdefense : 44 #campal : 39 #elimination : 26 #pictionary : 22 #control : 6 #infected : 6 #dancedance : 1 #tagging : 0 #shatrix : 0 #keyhunt : 0 Now let there be ~1k people in survivor, defilante, etc => Less than 10% of all peeps are in minigames rooms. So, what other cases do we have? 1) tribehouses (playing +afking) 2) vanilla rooms 3) ghost rooms 4) playerbase is decreasing 1) lots of people on my friendlist are often in the tribehouse. But I have no idea how representative my f-list is. 2) I counted 10 full vanilla rooms right now on en1 (according to cfm about 2k ppl are online on en) Lets say 300 people are playing in vanilla rooms (en1) (15%) 3) hard to count. I'd say it is a very low number 4) probably I counted about 11 full normal rooms (en1). To make it simple, I say 300 people (15%). So, in my totally simple system, 15% is playing in normal rooms, 15% in vanilla rooms, <10% in minigame rooms and ~60% in triberooms? Unclear: are the numbers from cfm and the game itself correct? Possible interpretations: - people become more inactive and just log on to stay afk in the tribehouse. - decrease in playerbase |

I agree with every point that everyone here has mentioned. The normal rooms' communities and regulars are decreasing dramatically. It's quite sad to see. As I joined Transformice about a year or so ago, and since I am still active, it's disappointing to see how many people would rather play minigames than the main game itself. I'm not saying that minigames are bad and are ruining the game, but I know that debulua rooms will soon become mainstream and under-used once new aspects are added. I'm a room 7 regular, and it's obvious that the population of room regs' is dropping. And unfortunatly, solutions to this problem seem unclear... |

I'm so surprised by one thing - that you're all saying it's bad. I totally agree with one point - there used to be a lot more players in numbered rooms. But the real reason for that is that they didn't have any other rooms to go! This shows that creating bootcamp, racing, vanilla, minigames, etc rooms was a good step as players enjoy them more as ordinary numbered rooms. If you like playing in normal room (like I do) then totally feel free to. But! If you want a change, if you prefer a different playstyle, you can have it. You're also basically stating that it's bad that tfm has so many communities. Why would it be? Yes, there may be less player in each of them, but they enjoy the game even more. There is also one important thing to be considered: default community/room upon connecting. It's not something I fully agree with. I believe that a lot of players won't even realize that there are other types of rooms/communities. On the other hand, you'd be surprsed how many players would quit right at the start if they had to choose manually. (tl;dr version) To conclude, I agree that numbered room playerbase is becoming thinner. I don't think it's a bad thing and if you want to change it - simply play more and let your friends explore the beauty of numbered rooms :) |

When i firstjoined this game i was spawned in room 16, they usually had around 24+ in that room. So of course that became my reg room and i was a regular there. until my friend told me how great vanilla was and stuff and everyone seemed to be going there, now ill be surprised to even find 1 mouse in room 16.. R.i.p room 16 </3 |

I really agree with most of the points brought up here. I regularly play in 7 and that room used to stay above 30 mice all the time. Now it occasionally hits 25. Anyways, the big question: what's to be done? I really think that with everything splitting off of the main EN server into module, bc, vanilla, EN2 it all boils down to where the admins want to go with this. Do they want a main place for mice? or just let them split off into smaller communities. Pros and Cons to each, but they seem to be leaning for smaller communities. In the future will this continue? Will the communities continue getting smaller? I dunno. |

While Wyverna makes some good points, I think the questions raised in the post above mine are more relevant. What's to be done, how does Atelier 801 see the future for this game? Yes, being able to choose is nice. Choosing game type or language can really make Transformice more fun. However, just like Wyverna I believe that a lot of players won't even realize that there are other choices (and if they do know they can choose they might not be aware of all of their alternatives). In that sense, is it a good idea to have all new players automatically spawn in vanilla? Why not divide them more? Sure, you won't get to see any completely unplayable map and most of the maps are simple enough to learn shamaning basics. However, variety is low. There are only so many maps to be played. I know that I would've quit ages ago if not for the map editor. Another thing I think needs to be considered is that having more choice isn't always a good thing. Think of the supermarket that has entire walls of just one product by dozens of different brands. I can't find a better metaphor, but I do sometimes feel like these kind of options are dividing the playerbase too much at a time where EN doesn't really seem to grow substantially. ---- Something else entirely. I argued before that having all these tiny communities fracture the EN community while not being large enough to have all of the parts of the game populated. This while some of these communities on average have a fine understanding of the English language (NL, DE, VK). Perhaps interface translations and communities shouldn't go hand in hand. It should be possible to play on EN while having the game interface in your own language. This would probably be some work and I doubt it'll happen. But yeah, just an idea. |

I think transformice has gotten to the point when most mice don't think the point of the game is to collect the cheese and bring it into the hole Same thing kinda happened to food. We don't know what is real and the choices of food is too much for us to decide on. In other words, i think there's too many things that mice can do |

Lemodile a dit : As someone said, there is the /langue command if you want to play in EN or any other communities and keep the interface in your main language. We don't do it automaticaly because we're afraid people would start spamming in their own languages without understanding that they are in an english-only community or any other languages. Especialy if it's their first time on Transformice. About vanilla, we've decided to put newcomers in these rooms because we believe it's better for them to start there. The general rotation is great and brings variety to the game, but we think it's also more confusing and harder to apprehend the game in numbered rooms. As of advertising the other minigames, we're planning to do it as soon as the module becomes a public release. Right now it's still a beta and it's still not complete. The main minigames played are also ffa-like so we prefer to wait for more diversity before announcing them. |
